  • Month of Heart Health Awareness!

On February 7th, 2020, Mukesh Panchal, UMAS Adult Day Care Nurse at Naperville location, conducted a slide show presentation to educate the seniors on Heart Health Awareness. Seniors and staff of Naperville dressed up in red honoring Heart Health Awareness month. They were eager to know how they can reduce the risk of heart disease!

Mukesh Panchal explained that cardiovascular disease is most prevalent amongst the South Asian population. Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, remains the leading global cause of death with more than 17.3 million deaths each year. That number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030. The seniors were made aware that 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events can be prevented with education and making good health choices!

As healthcare professionals and ADS Staff we at UMAS/MAFS strive to encourage our seniors, staff and their families to make health changes to lower the risk of developing heart disease. Everyone was encouraged to:
• Schedule regular visits with a doctor to talk about heart health
• Develop healthy eating by including fruits and vegetables
• Control cholesterol and blood pressure.
• Control diabetes if you are diabetic
• Take medication(s) as prescribed
• Reduce stress/get enough sleep
• Cut added sugar, salt and avoid carbonated beverages.
• If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
• Get Physically active by exercising regularly.
• Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoking!
• Practice good dental hygiene, especially flossing your teeth daily.
• Don’t sit for too long at the same place.

UMAS/MAFS recommends all… to take advantage of this offer from AMITA Health to get a Heart Scan for only $49.00. Please Call 877-596-7314 to schedule an appointment that can save your life! The heart scan is painless and noninvasive. If you’ve already been diagnosed with heart disease, you will not need to get a heart scan. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions. This scan does not require a physician’s order. However, your healthcare provider, e.g. your primary care doctor, will need to review the result.
